Why is it so difficult for so many Americans to lose weight? Probably because we just enjoy eating so well. The desire for food is strong and hard to resist. Hunger is powerful. It controls us, and so often determines our behavior. The desire for food and water are perhaps the strongest appetites we have as human beings.
In His teachings in the New Testament, Jesus talked about a Higher Hunger—hungering and thirsting for God, desiring His presence and His Power. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness…” (Matthew 5:6).
The word “righteousness” has both a spiritual side and a moral side to it. The spiritual side means to know and love God. In a phrase, it means to be right with God—to have a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ. “Blessed are those who are longing to be right with God.”
The moral side of righteousness means to do what is right. “Blessed are those who are longing to do what is right in God’s eyes.”
